ECTS Credits Allocated: 6.00
Pre-requisites: To successfully participate in this course knowledge of social and political theory, urban sociology, general history and art history are necessary.

Course objectives: The main objective of this course is for students to learn to "read" social spaces, functions and forms in modern cities(macro and micro level, public and private space) in light of recent alternative movements and applications in architecture.

Course description: The course content will address the social-historical context, in other words, social, economic, political and cultural changes that followed philosophical and scientific developments, which led to new approaches in architecture that challenged past traditional approaches. The subject will center on social conditioning and effects of avant garde movements(futurism, de stijl, bauhaus, constructivism...), their characteristics(manifestos, charters), goals and values. Each movement will be examined in relation to three characteristic moments:attempt to ameliorate the scientific method into architectural creation, a new concept of time and different ways of forming new movements and directions in architecture. Along with this, the status and role of avant garde architectural movements will be addressed(from acceptance to rejection)as they were during various political systems, from liberal to authoritarian, during the twentieth century. Along with other documents(manifestos), attention will be put on the Athens Charter, Warsaw Declaration, and Machu Picchu Charters.

Learning Outcomes: Through learning about the main players in =alternative/avant garde architecture and urbanism and their influence on creating new "textures" of a city students will gain a better understanding of the building of a cities identity.
