Philosophy – Doctoral Degree 2014
Traditional and Contemporary Metaphysics
Status: optional
Recommended Year of Study: 1
Recommended Semester: 2
ECTS Credits Allocated: 10.00
Pre-requisites: None

Course objectives: Student should get introduced to problems of contemporary metaphysics and to the essential differences between the ways in which those problems have been dealt with within contemporary and traditional metaphysics.

Course description: Anti-metaphysical projects, which were formulated within different philosophical orientations, were characteristic of the first half of the 20th century. So, the major part of the content of this course will be devoted to analysis of works of Russell, Wittgenstein, Vienna Circle members, phenomenologists and existentialists in which these projects have been explicitly exhibited or clearly present. However, as Kant once tried to critically devaluate metaphysics, but only to be substituted with a new one, metaphysics based on criticism, so it turned out that those directions, mentioned above, have led to a new flowering of metaphysics, which is most evident in the so-called analytical philosophy. That would be the subject of the second part of the course. At the end, the distinction between traditional and contemporary metaphysics should become clear.

Learning Outcomes: Student will gain insight into the way in which philosophers are dealing with metaphysics nowdays, in contrast to how this was done throughout history.
