Course objectives: Understanding the value and characteristics of environmental adult education as the field of interdisciplinary andragogical study and practice, based on the concepts of sustainability and lifelong learning.

Course description: Theoretical segment: Introduction into the concept and terms. Environmental adult education and sustainable development. Environmental adult education and lifelong learning. Ecological and education policy as contexts for development of environmental adult education. Epistemological foundations and approaches. Fields and aspects of environmental adult education. Adult education and environmental leadership. Education and public participation in solving problems and decision making in local environment. Practical segment: The role of adult educator in environmental adult education in practice. Needs analysis and opportunities of adults to meet their needs through environmental adult education. Methods and strategies of teaching in environmental adult education. Environmental education and basic, vocational and higher education of adults. Non formal learning, civil society and environmental activism. Social responsibility and management, best practice examples and visits to environmental organizations.

Learning Outcomes: Identified characteristics and perspectives of adult environmental education. Improved critical stance towards ecological issues and solutions. Recognized mechanisms and possibilities of educators’ actions for raising understanding of environmental issues.
