Idea and Ideologies of Yugoslavism: creation, historical development and functions

Pre-requisites: Knowledge of basic sociological ideas and theories and elementary knowledge of the history of South Slavic nations in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Course objectives: Introducing students to the basic problems related to Yugoslavia and ideological conflicts that were present in its existence, as well as the importance of the international context for it's existence as a multinational political unit.

Course description: This course covers the issues in historical sociology of the politics and inter-ethnic relationships in Yugoslavia:issues surrounding the application of sociological and political middle range theories to historical material; an introduction to basic theories on ethnic relations; applying interaction theory and ethnic competition theory to explain the creation, development, roles and specificity of various ideologies of Yugoslavism; the shaping of different ideologies of Yugoslavism both among Serbs and among Croats. We will analyze Yugoslavism in the 19th century, on the eve of the First World War, in between the two world wars, socialist Yugoslavism and various perspectives on the disappearance of Yugoslavia. At the end of this survey, we will examine the possibility of Yugoslavia re-surging after the fall of socialism.

Learning Outcomes: Students will be familiar with the basic problems present during history of Yugoslavia and research methods most commonly used for studying these issues. Students will be capable of approaching questions posed in historiography and political studies from a sociological and critical perspective.
