Introduction to Sociology 1

Pre-requisites: Prior knowledge acquired in high school sociology courses and a sufficient degree of knowledge of general cultural ideas.

Course objectives: To introduce students to basic assumptions, concepts, structural and developmental issues of sociology as a science taught from the perspective of various theoretical, methodological and practical standpoints.

Course description: Theoretical instruction introduces students to basic concepts, theories and methods of analysis of the historical and social context for the appearance of sociology as a science, inequality in divisions of labor, wealth, power, status, identity formation, environment and crime. Practical instruction is conducted through participation of students in discussions, writing and debating exploratory seminar papers on a selected topic, enabling students to master key concepts from the perspectives of founders of basic theoretical and methodological approaches to research in sociology.

Learning Outcomes: Gaining critical insights, research tools and skills for the analysis of social structures and their development, power, poverty, deviance, gender identity and social ecological risks.
