Pre-requisites: Previous knowledge or some background in world religions is desirable in order to participate in this course, particularly on religions that have historically been present in this region (Christianity, Judaism, Islam).

Course objectives: Becoming familiar with and understanding „classical“ and contemporary theoretical approaches to religion with an emphasis on sociological theories on religion, as well as current religious traditions in the context of world religions in their present forms.

Course description: This course will examine: characteristics, ideas and definitions of religion, as well as theoretical and methodological branches of religious sciences; the role and function of religion in society; myths, symbols and rituals and their value in society; religious organizations and groups; interactions & relationship between religious communities and states; religion and nation; religion and secularization; religion and conflict; the present-day issue of the Western world and Islam. More attention will be given to questions that are meaningful for religion in our own society, such as: inter-faith dialogue and peace-making between religious communities; debates about religious education in public schools; problems of religious freedom and human rights etc.

Learning Outcomes: Students should be able to exhibit sensitivity to religious differences both on a local and global level and will understand the role of religion in contemporary conflicts, but also the contributions and efforts of religious communities in fostering dialogue and peace.
