Course objectives: Understanding the relations and interdependence of culture, recognised as a system of meanings, education as a mediator of culture and childhood as a concept and a practice of growing up. Development of critical relations towards the student’s understanding of the childhood in today’s conditions.

Course description: Childhood as a cultural-historical creation. Concepts and approaches. Historical, sociological, ethnographic-anthropological, psychological, literary and laic view on childhood. Modern and postmodern understanding of childhood. Shaping childhood in traditional and modern societal context. Understanding the child and childhood as a starting point for teaching concepts and practices of education of young children. Child and culture: different understanding of the concept of culture. Cultures as the systems of meaning. ECEC Center/School seen as a culture and as an educational culture. Intertextuality – how do we „read“ the culture and how do we integrate ourselves into the culture – Intersubjectivity and culture of peer learning. Children’s culture as a product and as a process.

Learning Outcomes: The student is familiar with the different concepts of childhood and understands the phenomenon of childhood. The student understands the childhood as a product of culture. Student is familiar and understand ways in which the socio-cultural context shaping understanding of the childhood and education child
