Course objectives: The course aims to show that the linguistic structures are special case of structuration in nature. Through a specific approach to language processing in the information theory, the course aims to demonstrate the capabilities of mathematical and statistical description of the cognitive limitations of the system from which creates, as a nearly optimal solution, the complex morphological and syntactic structures.

Course description: Review of studies that have focused on understanding of the self-organization and structuration of natural systems. The morphology of the language as a special case of the morphology of natural systems. Overview of standard approach to cognitive processing of morphologically complex words. Presentation of cybernetic models and connectionist approach. Information theory and specification of linguistic phenomena in terms of quantity of information. Different types of entropy as descriptors of cognitive limitations and their impact on language processing. Possible scenario of the genesis of linguistic structures based on examples from the development and diachronous studies.

Learning Outcomes: After passing the exam, students will gain insight and critical attitude towards different models of cognitive aspects of language processing.
