Pre-requisites: Passing exams in General and Special Psychopathology, Fundamentals of Psychotherapy and Counselling.

Course objectives: Exploring, understanding and contrasting theories and methods of different psychotherapeutic approaches, development of critical thinking about relevant issues in this area, developing motivation for psychotherapeutic practice and crystallising students’ preferences.

Course description: Course provides basic knowledge about different theories and methods of psychotherapy and counselling. This includes: psychoanalytic therapy, analytic therapy, client centred therapy, gestalt therapy, transactional analysis, behavioural therapy, rational emotive behaviour therapy, cognitive therapy, systemic family therapy, post modern therapy. For each of the approaches following issues will be considered: a. the key theoretical concepts b. therapeutic relationship; c. therapeutic process; d. therapeutic techniques, e. theory of therapeutic change; f. indications for therapy, g. contributions and limitations; h. evaluation of processes and outcomes.

Learning Outcomes: Acquiring the ability to independently recognize and compare different approaches and to critically think about these issues, in order to be able to choose the approach within which the student is going to continue his or her education (at master level).
