Course objectives: To prepare students to identify potential research issues in educational practice, to plan research work, using data gathering and processing techniques autonomously or in teams, interpreting data with the aim of advancing teaching practice.

Course description: Theoretical instruction:
Epistemologies of pedagogical research. Action research. Ethnographic approach to research.
Research carried out by the teacher. The significance and role of the researcher-practitioner. Typology of teacher research. Teachers in research projects. Teacher self-evaluation.
Potential application of different research techniques and instruments in school research activities: observation, questionnaires and interviews, focus groups. Methods of data analysis: descriptive statistics, content analysis, analysis of video materials.

Practical instruction:
- The analysis of different research studies in terms of their aim, methods, techniques and instruments, implications for practice.
- Seminar on using software (MAXQDA) to organise and analyse qualitative data.
- Elaboration and realization of a `small-scale` research project and the elaboration of the draft action plan aimed at changing the existing practice.

Learning Outcomes: Students should be able to:
- identify problems in educational practice, which can be understood better and solved through the teacher`s research and reflection on research findings
- select and use adequate approaches, research methods and techniques
- to draft a research project in educational practice
- to analyse data and interpret research findings (their implications for practice and own professional development)
