History of Philosophical Ideas

Pre-requisites: Knowledge of English language. Knowledge of French, German, Italian and Latin is desirable, not necessary.

Course objectives: The goal of this course is to enable students to place philosophical ideas in their broader historical context and to observe the way in which they are developing in those contexts.

Course description: This course deals with the transmission and transformation of philosophical ideas. The course examines how the philosophical ideas are born and how they are changed, and how they fit into the existing political and economic systems, scientific theories and cultural complexities while being influenced by them, how do they affect the articulation of thought and evaluation in different historical eras. The course will begin with general consideration on history of ideas with special attention paid to the major theorists of history of philosophical ideas. After that, the course will focus on the histories of particular ideas - the history of ideas of autonomy and interests in the modern period, and the history of romantic ideas in 18th, 19th and 20th century.

Learning Outcomes: The course will train students to access philosophy both in problem-based way and in historical way, that would make them aware of the longevity of philosophical ideas and the unpredictability of their destinies and it will give them positive knowledge of the history of some philosophical ideas.
