Ethnology and Anthropology – Bachelor’s Degree 2014
Archaeology and Social Anthropology – A History of Ideas
Status: optional
Recommended Year of Study: 1
Recommended Semester: 2
ECTS Credits Allocated: 6.00
Pre-requisites: Archaeology students must have already passed “Introduction to Archaeology”; for other students, there is no prerequisite.

Course objectives: Instilling students with a foundation of the history of socio-cultural anthropology, which allows for an understanding of the history of ideas, theory and practice of archaeology.

Course description: As an elective, the course aims to cover the interlinked history of socio-cultural anthology and archaeology as well as to build on what has been covered in “Introduction to the Archaeology”. Socio-cultural anthropology itself is the main focus of the course as well as the interdependence of social anthropology and archaeology (as such, some approaches to anthropology have been more present than others concerning the history of archaeology). While archaeology and social anthropology share a common origin, over time they have emerged in their differentiation from one another despite coming back together again as being integral to one another. As two separate disciplines, they are interested in and have the same problems. This course aims to lay out all these differences and similarities while teaching the student to think critically about theoretical bases.

Learning Outcomes: Possessing a clear understanding of the history of socio-cultural anthropology in its relation to archaeology in their interlinked history.
