Methodology for Prehistorians

Pre-requisites: Fulfillment of necessary obligations regarding subjects of Methodology and theory of archaeological research, ability to use computers (basic).

Course objectives: Introduction to methodological specifics necessary for prehistoric archaeology. Acquirement of additional knowledge used for excavating earthen structures, layer analysis and the functional interpretation of architectural remains.

Course description: The introductory lectures will demonstrate the development in archaeological methodology on prehistoric sites. Special attention will be given to the development of research techniques, especially the ways to document the data collected in the field. The differences in results of different excavating techniques (the square pattern, locus and unit systems) will be demonstrated using examples form literature and archived field documents from the Vinca archaeological site. Sampling techniques for chemical analysis as well as micro morphology will also be covered in special lectures.
