Introduction to Ethics

Pre-requisites: None

Course objectives: Student should get introduced to the basic issues of ethics, major ethical theories and should obtain basic information on metaethics and applied ethics.

Course description: The course begins with an analysis of moral phenomenon and deals with determination of moral criteria and its characteristics, its differences in relation to other non-moral criteria, the social status of morality, the question of moral relativism, relation between moral and religion. The basic ethical theories are discussed (Utilitarianism, Deontological ethics, Virtue ethics, Doctrine of double effect, etc.). The course also includes basic points from metaethics as a theory of meaning and justification of moral terms and statements. Finally, students will be introduced to elementary distinctions which are important for the field of applied ethics and give some indications of moral methodology and epistemology.

Learning Outcomes: Getting familiar with the basic knowledge of ethics needed for advanced undergraduate, master and PhD courses (Ethics, Metaethics, Moral Epistemology, Philosophy of Law)
