Course objectives: Adoption of the basic concepts necessary to understand Dynastic Egypt, important archaeological sites and monuments as well as issues necessary for understanding Egyptian culture; familiarization with different primary sources.

Course description: The introductory part of the course covers: history of interest and interpretation of Ancient Egypt, Egyptology as a scientific discipline and its relation to the archaeology of Egypt. The second segment consists of geography and the natural surroundings. The third part dedicated to crucial sources and methodological problems faced when reconstructing the Egypt’s past and chronology of the Dynastic period. Along with the presentation of most important sites and different kinds of mobile and immobile objects there will be open discussions regarding: religion, royal power, inhabitants and social relations, literacy, relations with the rest of the known world of the time.

Learning Outcomes: Midterm examination, written exam.
