Pre-requisites: The prerequisites for this course are attended and/or passed exams from the first year study in History of Art.

Course objectives: The goal of the course is to acquire students with extensive knowledge about magisterial trends and characteristics of national architecture from early middle century to the downfall of the Serbian Empire.

Course description: The theoretical segment of the course is focused towards chronological presentation and interpretation of trends concerning the development of medieval architecture in Serbia, as well as towards emphasizing specific forms that are products of geographical and historical circumstances surrounding the establishment of the architecture, and towards various changes within its corpus. The special attention is paid to analysis of constructive, iconographic and art factors, as well as to total significance of most important achievements in artistic and broader historical context. The course is particularly concerned with sacral architecture and architecture of founded cities, as well as with forms in building that appeared after the downfall of the Serbian Empire. The practical section of the course is oriented towards the interactive approach to students, including appropriate visual support and mandatory individual student work on smaller sections of the course in agreement with a professor.

Learning Outcomes: The course is designed to acquire students with abilities to competitively examine and analyze general and individual characteristics and problems concerning medieval architecture in Serbia, as well as establishing the connections with constructive creative work of different European regions.
